About Canberra
Canberra itself is a small but vibrant and sophisticated city, offering all the benefits of metropolitan living without the traffic, pollution and expenses associated with bigger cities. Home to Australian politics and to many of the country's most important cultural and historical sights. Canberra is a livable, friendly city with a young and lively population.
Bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes all crowd the central city, and other such gems can be found hidden away in nearby suburs. Enjoy annual festivals, such as the Canberra International Film Festival, Floriade, the Multicultural Festival or the National Folk Festival , and make the most of some of the country’s most important sights by visiting the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, the Australian National Library and Parliament House.
For those wanting to escape the urban grind, you can enjoy the outdoors and walk amid the city’s beautiful lakeshores, through its countless urban bush land reserves, or within its extensive network of bike paths. Take a day trip to any of a number of national parks that are just a short drive from the city, or take yourself away to Sydney (3 hour drive), the Snowy Mountains (2 hour drive) or the pristine beaches of the South Coast (2 hour drive) for a weekend getaway.
Accommodation
UC has on-campus student residences, known as Ressies, for over 1000 students. The social atmosphere and the university’s proximity to shopping malls, bars, restaurants, markets and movie theatres make Ressies a vibrant place to live.
For students not wanting to live on campus, UC provides a number of other housing options, from homestay to private share accommodation. Independent living is also viable; reasonable living costs, great public transport and a compact city centre make Canberra a very accessible city.
