Queensland University of Technology - Support and Services

QUT's International Student Services (ISS) provides valuable help and support for all international student needs. Services include pre-departure and arrival information, academic and personal counselling, accommodation and employment assistance, homestay, orientation, airport reception, language and learning advice, workshops and seminars.

ISS also organises short trips to many of the fantastic nearby destinations that Queensland has to offer. These activities are scheduled throughout the year and are designed to accommodate students' tight budgets.

Orientation
An extensive orientation program provides information on studying at QUT and living in Australia. Held during the week before studies commence, the program covers detailed information on enrolment, the university, the campuses and faculties, tuition fees, immigration, health cover and much more.

The orientation program concludes with an optional excursion presenting an ideal opportunity to meet other international students and sample some of the local attractions.

Airport Reception
Arrangements can be made for QUT staff to meet students at BrisbaneInternationalAirport. This service is available to all international students commencing formal studies at QUT who choose from a selected list of temporary accommodation or who are going directly to their pre-arranged permanent accommodation in Brisbane.

Accommodation
International Student Services has an extensive accommodation service for international students including liaison with landlords and real estate agents and finding available vacancies. ISS provide a list of temporary accommodation to assist newly arrived students with somewhere to stay.

Some common types of accommodation for QUT students:

Whole house or unit

The most common type of accommodation chosen by international students.
A weekly rent is charged for a furnished/unfurnished flat or house. Other costs include electricity, gas and telephone.

Shared house or unit

Shared accommodation may be offered by either a single person or couples, who might be local residents or other international students.

Residential Colleges

Residential colleges normally provide students with a single bedroom with study desk, shared bathrooms, common rooms and a dining hall.

Homestay/full board

A set weekly fee is charged to cover all expenses associated with food and shelter, including two meals per day, provision of facilities, and cleaning services.

Hostels

A set weekly/fortnightly/semester fee is charge for either a single room or twin share (two people per room)

Language and learning
QUT understands that one of the greatest concerns for International students studying in Australia is developing of spoken and written English. As a result QUT provides language and learning advisers to help to improve English and develop study skills. Students can attend supportive group workshops or make an appointment for individual assistance. This is a free service for international students.

Employment
Working in Australia can be fun and a great way to make friends. The current student visa entitles students to apply for a part-time work permit, which allows international students to work up to 20 hours per week during semester, and full-time during vacations. International Student Services has information and advice on locating part-time work. It is important that students note they should not rely on part-time work to cover expenses.

QUT offers a unique International Careers Counsellor to help full degree students find work placements in their home country and assist graduating students to find work when they return.
