International student scholarship winner profile – Renate Gilde, Bachelor of Arts

For Renate Gilde, winning a Deakin University International Scholarsh

ip meant that she could afford to travel to different parts of Australia and New Zealand, while pursuing her dream to become a journalist.

On the basis of her outstanding academic achievements, Renate and a select group of international students were the worthy recipients of the $A5000-a-year scholarships from Deakin in the form of reduced tuition fees.

“I was very surprised when I found out I had won the scholarship. Then I realized that winning the scholarship would allow me to travel to places like Cairns and Alice Springs when I couldn’t have done so otherwise.

Now I hang the scholarship certificate on my closet door to inspire me further – and to show my college friends,” confessed Renate.

Renate’s success story is an example of the emphasis that DeakinUniversity places on nurturing and recognising academic excellence that has given it a world-class reputation as well as led to its inclusion as a finalist in several categories in the Australian Awards for University Teaching in recent years.

“I attended a presentation by a DeakinUniversity representative that left a huge impression on me. Not only that, Deakin had a good reputation in Europe, and I found that the subjects I wanted to do were relevant to my goals, which led to my decision to study at Deakin,” recalls Renate.

The Deakin Bachelor of Arts incorporates a diverse and balanced approach in its delivery with equal emphases on theory and practice, flexibility and structure, and innovative and traditional teaching methods.

We wish Renate all the best on her travels around Australia and on her future journey towards a career in journalism.
