AIR
There are three national airlines, all offering competitive flights for transport around Australia. Within the states and territories there are also smaller airlines to serve regional areas. Depending on your time frame, air travel is by far the quickest way to get from place to place.
TRAIN
Each capital city has a metropolitan train service for transport around the city. For travelling around Australia there are a number of regional lines that cross the country combined with a variety of fares designed especially for travellers.
To name a few there is the famous Ghan route between Adelaide and Darwin, the Indian Pacific running between Sydney and Perth, and the Melbourne to Perth route is traversed by the Overland.
BUS
Each city will also have metropolitan buses as part of their public transport, along with long distance, regional services.
For interstate travel, bus fares are cheaper than plane and train prices, and also service the widest range of locations. In fact, they can be the only method of public transport available in some areas. There are a number of bus companies available for you to choose from.
VEHICLE HIRE
A popular option is to hire a camper van or a car. Overseas students may drive in Australia on a valid overseas driver's licence (an international driving licence is not sufficient by itself).
There are many different vehicle models and sizes so your choice will depend upon how many of you are travelling.
The advantage of travelling in this way is that you have the freedom to go wherever you wish, and can make your own timetable. If you are in a camper van you can also save money by being able to self cater.
Alternatively you can buy an old van or car to travel around in. Should you decide to take this option you may want to have someone with you with basic automotive skills, or be a member of the Australian breakdown service, as travelling around Australia does involve long distances between towns. There are also courses in basic mechanical skills suitable for this sort of knowledge requirement.
CYCLING
For the fit and adventurous Australia offers wonderful cycling opportunities. There are cycling tours available or you can research and plan your own. Each state has cycling websites and books designed to assist bike enthusiasts. Whilst this sort of holiday requires more planning due to an increased need to investigate weather and climate conditions, and how far between each town (and water supply), they also provide an unequalled way of really getting an idea of Australia.
